DISCO AI Principles
DISCO was founded on the belief that technology can truly change the practice of law. Through domain expertise, investment in platform and performance, and more than a decade of innovation in AI, we have been committed since our inception to empowering legal professionals with cutting-edge technology.
Recent developments in AI, including generative AI, provide an even greater opportunity for legal teams to provide higher-quality, more efficient service to their clients. At the same time, legal teams do high-stakes work where the margin for error is slim to none, and the underlying data is important.
The following principles inform the design and deployment of DISCO's products and services. We stand behind them as foundational to the development of ethical AI for legal practice.
Verifiable
AI capabilities cannot replace lawyers. Instead, AI tools must be designed to support the exercise of legal judgment. We build tools with the goal of giving legal professionals context to evaluate and verify the output of AI. This includes citations to underlying documents or content wherever possible.
Controllable
We know that legal professionals — and their clients — have different comfort levels with nascent GenAI technology. Therefore, we build our offerings such that legal professionals retain the ability to control whether and how GenAI can be used.
Secure
We understand that client data must be protected. DISCO is committed to a rigorous vendor selection process that is designed to prevent client data from being used to train a vendor’s GenAI model for general use. This reduces the possibility of one client's data being exposed to another client through a model's output. We require vendors to process data in an environment
that has been certified as ISO 27001 and/or SOC 2 Part 2 compliant, and requires them to use encryption technology to protect sensitive data at rest and in transit over the Internet.
Purposeful
AI capabilities should be added only when they solve real customer problems, such as investigating the facts on an ediscovery scale, not just to check a box or jump on a trend. We are committed to creating AI tools that help customers reduce risks and can be validated and defended in court.
Collaborative
Customers must be set up for success when using GenAI. We strive to build products that are intuitive for legal professionals to learn and adopt. We invest in teams of experts (in both AI and our products) to advise on sound practices, realistic limitations, and workflows that achieve customer goals.
With these principles, we are confident in our ability to innovate responsibly, equip legal professionals to obtain better outcomes for their clients, and improve the practice of law.
